Social Media Post Has Memphis Police Ready With Extra Patrols

Wednesday night the Memphis Police Department said they are aware of a social media post threatening a gang fight on New Year's Eve at the Malco Majestic Theater in Hickory Hill.

An MPD spokesperson said they have a plan in place and officers will take care of any issues.

Malco theaters issued this statement:

"We are aware of the social media threat and take all security issues very seriously. While internal security operations are not disclosed publicly, we are working closely with MPD to ensure the continued safety of our patrons and employees."

That threat came after local law enforcement steps up patrols around Memphis malls. The increased security is in response to chaotic scenes on Monday at both Wolfchase Galleria and Oak Court Mall.

At the request of Memphis Police, MPD and Shelby County Sheriff's deputies will work together to patrol Wolfchase Galleria for the foreseeable future.

"There was cops everywhere," said shopper Anna Webb who noticed more police on Tuesday a day after large fights.

"That makes me feel a lot safer that there's going to be like officers there all the time you know? Not just sometimes when they're caught. If they're there like all the time they can be there when it happens," said Webb.

Shelby County Sheriff's deputies began patrolling the Wolfchase mall with Memphis Police on Wednesday.

The SCSO public information officer said members of their SWAT team would be assigned inside the mall and other deputies will be close by.

"They'll find the money, so taxpayers are going to pay for it whether it's city or the county, it'll be taken care of," said SCSO public information officer Earle Farrell when asked about who would pay for the increased patrols.

As deputies and Memphis Police team up to patrol Wolfchase law enforcement officials asked parents to step in too.

"Make sure their kids are where they're supposed to be and be checking their devices and seeing that they're not involved with this because it's a dangerous game they're playing," said Farrell.

SCSO will only assist MPD at Wolfchase Galleria since it is a larger property. Farrell said MPD would take care of Oak Court.

It's not clear when the increased patrols will end.
