Southern Christian Leadership Conference End 4 Day Convention In Memphis With Activist David Banner

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - The Southern Christian Leadership Conference also known as SCLC wrapped up a 4 day convention in Memphis with a candid conversation with nationally known rapper and activist David Banner.

Banner spoke to dozens of people at the Peabody Hotel Saturday afternoon.  SCLC says Memphis was chosen for its national convention primarily because this was the city Dr. Martin Luther King Junior founded the organization 59 years ago.

Banner, originally from Brookhaven, MS, is known for his music but he is also a social activist and has been speaking to communities about promoting positive change and steering youth into the right direction.

"History is relevant in general. That's part of our problem a lot of our people have been disconnected from their culture. If we don't know the past we are doomed for it to happen over and over again," Banner said.

SCLC is celebrating nearly 60 years of carrying out the poor people's campaign, something Dr. King pushed so hard for.  Saturday's conversation was focused to improving black families and steering youth into the right direction.

"Our culture is broke so if we change the culture if we came back out here and start being apart of these children lives instead of looking at them as if they are our enemies maybe they will rap about something else there has been a disconnect," Banner explained.

Mayor Strickland recently expressed the critical need for opportunities for Memphis youth and SCLC members hope today's event struck a nerve.

"It brought a lot of young people out so that's more important because again what he was saying young people are the future," Smith explained.

There will be a number of events leading up to the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination and SCLC members say they will be back to facilitate some of those events.  Members are currently planning those activities
