Students Walk Out In Peaceful Protest At Kingsbury High

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Dozens of students walked out of class Tuesday at Kingsbury High School. We're told the peaceful protest started around noon. Organizers say they wanted to send a message about equality and unity.

The students were directed to the auditorium, where they had a conversation with the school principal.

Memphis police and Shelby County campus security surrounded the school during the protest, but no one was arrested.

"It was normal until around lunchtime when they started saying to do it peacefully, to go to the high school and then the gym. Student council came up to me and they told me to participate and to tell everybody to do the walk out. And one student came up with it while the others just followed suit,” says student Gabriela Armenta.

Statement from th Shelby County School District:

"Students at Kingsbury High School conducted a peaceful demonstration during the school day today. We respect students’ freedom of expression; however, as educators, we are committed to help them be productive and voice their opinions without being disruptive or missing valuable instructional time. No matter what challenges students may be dealing with, schools are a safe place where teachers care about their education and well-being."
