The Mid-South Braces For Winter Weather Friday

MEMPHIS, Tenn (localmemphis.com) - Local and Tennessee state officials say they are prepared for Mother Nature.

Salt and sand trucks will be on stand by to treat the roads but it's up to you to be safe.

City of Memphis crews can't put brine which is a salt water mixture on the roads yet because rain will wash it away.

"Some of the bridges freeze up a little earlier and we are expecting some high wind tonight and in the morning so we pay special attention to those structures cause they seem to freeze up first," said Michael Welch with the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Local and state officials urge motorists to take their time and use good judgment if they have to get behind the wheel.

City of Memphis Public Works Director Robert Knecht said, "My recommendation is you know check the weather. We don't know what's gonna happen with schools. That's always a big influence on what people have to do for their morning right."

TDOT has 37 salt and sand trucks to treat Shelby County.  The city of Memphis has a dozen.

Crews will come in at midnight and watch for Mother Nature to arrive.

Officials say the biggest problem areas are bridges and overpasses, especially Nonconnah.

"We've had some issues and we've actually done some modifications to those bridges to give em a little more friction so hopefully we won't have that this year," said Welch.

City of Memphis crews will first treat bridges and overpasses hospitals, police and fire stations then main thoroughfares.

Remember, they can't treat every street.

Stay home if you can.

Be safe if you have to get out.
