The Two Dollar Good News From MLGW

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Somebody should have grilled some hot dogs, at the Memphis City Council meeting.

It was a picnic for Memphis Light, Gas, and Water CEO Jerry Collins.

Consider the environment.

He was speaking following an event that had 20,000 Memphis residents standing in lines outside convenience stores, thinking that a basketball players generosity led to the vast majority of their bills being paid, well, that story was heard all over the country. "There's 187 kiosks in the Memphis-Shelby county area," Collins told council members.

It was a computer network mistake, Collins says.

A misplaced decimal point, showing people they owed a lot less on their bills than they thought.

The city council often pounces on the power people.

This time, council members took it easy on Collins. A question from Memphis City Councilman Martavius Jones was one of the toughest Collins faced. "If somebody was logging into their computer," Councilman Jones asked, "... paying their bill, they wouldn't have seen this error?" Collins answered "It was only for the kiosks. It did not impact payments on the internet, It did not impact payments by phone."

If you waited in line Saturday morning, battling the heat of the morning along with the people buying beer and chips at the convenience store, only to learn that your utility bill you thought was paid in full isn't, there's good news.

You're going to get a little money credited on your next bill.

Underline the word little. "The $2 convenience fees that were paid by the customers will be credited," Collins told council members. "That was 18,774 customers, about $37,000."
