They Want To Be Sheriff of Shelby County

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - If you want to get pictures of a lot of Sheriff's Deputies vehicles, you've got to come out to Arlington. The Shelby County Sheriff's Department has been considered mostly a suburban department. Bennie Cobb, who is running for Sheriff, says he wants to change that. "I've talked with thousands and thousands of people," Cobb says, "... and they just want a change."

He knows how to campaign, Bennie Cobb does.
He ran for Sheriff as a Democrat in 2006, 2010, 2014, and now this 2018 race.
This time, he thinks he knows how to win. "I was in Whitehaven," he says, ".. the heart of Whitehaven, and we were talking to a room full of educators. I asked who the current Sheriff was, and one person knew."

It's Bill Oldham, in case you were wondering.
That's the point, according to Cobb. With crime in Memphis, the need for law enforcement officers in Memphis, and with Memphis taxpayers paying Shelby County taxes, he wants to see the Sheriff's Department come into the city and go to work.  According to Cobb, "The Sheriff should absolutely, without having to give more money allocated, be visible and viable inside the city, and help the Memphis police department and any jurisdiction fight their crime problem.

Cobb is running a campaign where he wants to win as many votes possible inside the Memphis city limits.
He says he would be a visible sheriff as well, a none too subtle knock at incumbent Bill Oldham, who hasn't been seen much at all the past few months.
"I don't know how I could be more visible," Cobb says, "... because as a volunteer, as somebody who cares about the community, I am already out there. People know who I am."

As it stands right now, there are two Democrats who are running for Sheriff, which means there will be a primary, May 1st of next year.
