Search For Burglary Suspects Leads To Lockdown At 3 Germantown Schools

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - A busy Monday for Germantown police, after officers arrested two burglary suspects. The search led to a lockdown for Germantown Elementary, Germantown Middle, and Germantown High schools.

It all started a little after 10:00 a.m., when a homeowner called police and said he found two men at his home, and they fired shots at him.

"I was sitting in our study and heard pop, pop, pop, pop,” said Kelly Nanney.

The sounds of gunfire rang out in the quiet Germantown neighborhood, after a homeowner caught two men in his home on Hacks Cross Road. The gunfire startled Nanney, who lives across the street.

"When I first heard it, it did sound like gunfire, because I sent a text to Wilson and Leigh and I said group text, gunfire in the neighborhood,” said Nanney.

Germantown Police say the two suspects ditched their car and ran from the home after one of the men fired shots at the homeowner.

"Shortly thereafter, we were able to find one suspect hiding in a backyard here off of Laurinburg Circle,” said Germantown Deputy Chief Rodney Bright.

Officers and K-9 units searched the area for hours looking for the second suspect. Other agencies helped.

"I looked out my front door, about six police cars pulled right up beside my house. They all jumped out of the car, they had assault weapons had their hand guns drawn,” said Randall Chism.

Chism left his house to take a walk and spotted the second suspect. "When I saw him, probably about a minute later, police were dead on it.”

Folks like Nanney say this definitely puts their guards up. “It does kind of get your alarm bells up. I tend to be like, oh well, it's always going to happen to somebody else, but we really need to be careful.”

The lockdown at the schools was lifted by about 1:30 p.m.
