Three Shelby County Deputies Exposed To "Shake & Bake" Meth Lab

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Three Shelby County deputies were hospitalized Wednesday after unexpectedly encountering a meth lab in Millington.

It happened in the 5100 block of Thompson when the deputies went to serve a warrant. Instead, they found an active 'shake and bake' meth operation inside a mobile home.

A SCSO spokesperson said all three deputies were released after being decontaminated and treated as a precaution.

Those who live just feet from the illegal and dangerous chemical lab are outraged.

"It's just freaky, I just can't believe it,” says neighbor Linda Wilson. "I'm four trailers down, I'm worried about me getting blown up, you know, it's dangerous, it just blows my mind, I'm scared now."

Fire trucks and ambulances rolled into Shady Oaks Community Park in Millington after authorities showed up with a warrant, and instead found a meth lab inside a mobile home.

A SCSO spokesperson said the three deputies who served the warrants were exposed to the fumes, and taken to Regional One in Memphis to be treated.

"Pretty much consists of them washing down their clothes, their eyes, everything, two of them were feeling pretty woozy, so that's why they really wanted to go in and really check them out,” says Earle Farrell with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

While the deputies will be okay from the meth lab fumes, neighbors fumed about the situation, now knowing a dangerous meth lab operated so close by.

"It's kind of scary knowing something that close hits so close to home,” says another neighbor. "There's a lot of danger in that, you know, having all that with kids around." "

I did think there was something strange about the windows covered, you know, but I never saw anybody,” says Wilson.

Millington police, the Tennessee Meth and Pharmaceutical Task Force, and other agencies assisted.

There’s no word yet on any charges against the three people inside the home of that 'shake and bake' meth lab, who were all taken in for questioning.

"They are very dangerous you don’t know what find you are going to find on the other side of that door.”
