Tigers Fans Brave Remnants of Harvey For First Football Game Of Season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) -

Harvey may have wreaked havoc across the Mid-South, but it was no match for the Memphis Tigers and their fans during the season opener.

Plenty of fans showed up, wrapped in layers of plastic. It was ponchos and rain jackets galore. The main goal, aside from winning, was keeping dry.

Local 24 asked people how they were going to stay dry once inside Liberty Bowl.

"I'm not," said Pam Allen. "I'm not gonna stay dry. I'm just going to be wet, a wet Tiger fan."

On Thursday fans said Harvey had no game when it came to team spirit.

"Rain won't stop us," said Allen. "I'm a crazy Tiger fan."

Allen along with friends huddled under a canopy tent before making their way inside the stadium around 8p.m. They braved the whipping winds and cold rain just so they could watch their home team take on the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.

"We really didn't count on the wind," said Mario Bertagna. "I think the wind really hurt us, but you know, it's okay. We got our tailgate one. We ate. We probably have about one-third of our group who showed up."

Bertagna, Allen, and the rest of their crew are part of the Highland Hundred. They're the official booster club for the U of M football team. They told Local 24 that the booster club has weathered storms before. Harvey proved no different.

"I'm trying to remember," said Bertagna. I think Notre Dame or somebody else was play. I remember we were sitting on blocks of ice in the stadium. Other than that, this is probably the worst. Tonight, we'll be sitting in puddles."
