TN Lawmakers React To Shooting At Congressional Baseball Practice

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - The events just outside of Washington, D.C. Wednesday resonated deeply on Tennessee's Capitol Hill. Many state lawmakers called the shooting at a congressional baseball practice a watershed moment that should give everyone pause.

“We stay on a heightened alert all the time all the time. Its just our job. We are always looking for that unknown,” says Capt. Tommy Fyke with TN Protective Services Division.

Captain Fyke was among those watching the events of the shooting unfold with his heart going out the victims, but he brings a different eye to politicians being targeted.

He's in charge of protecting them as they go about their business at the Tennessee State Capitol and beyond.

“Constantly scanning the crowd, wherever we may be, whether it’s a ball game or hockey game, wherever we go with our elected officials,” says Capt. Fyke.

The captain told us his troopers have worked the nation's Capitol Hill security when someone like the Governor goes to D.C., or someone like House Speaker Paul Ryan comes to Tennessee, like he quietly did recently.

There is always training for that unknown. “Because it could happen at any given time,” says Capt. Fyke.

Every state lawmaker we talked to lauded their security here and the law enforcement at the nation's Capitol, while saying the world has changed again because of what happened just outside D.C.

The issue of guns is part of it.

“I am all for carrying weapons legally. I am for owning weapons, but we need to be careful as to how we let people own these high-powerful guns,” says Rep. Johnny Shaw (D – Bolivar).

“This is why I and my Republican peers are strong advocates of the 2nd Amendment. You need to protect yourself from these kind of people, because they walk through the laws that restrict gun ownership,” says TN House Republican Leader Rep. Glen Casada.

TN Capitol Hill security says it’s always training, always vigilant, and always planning for the unknown.
