TN Teachers Tell Lawmakers What Help They Need In The Classroom

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - Tennessee teachers always hope for a voice in how students are taught and what is required. So what are they telling lawmakers?

Tennessee k-12 classrooms are a big part of what goes on at the capitol, whether it be funding or how kids are taught. Some top Tennessee teachers were brought together near Nashville this week by the education group SCORE.

“The work you are doing is showing great impact,” Gov. Bill Haslam told the teachers.

Among those hearing an opening thank you from the Governor is Meagan England of Tazewell, Tennessee.

“I am looking at how to I make my students love reading,” says England. She passionately hopes state lawmakers continue funding levels for students who need help with reading.

“I do work with struggling readers and I want to make sure my students are just as important as any student in the state. And it really touches me that they want to make sure that all students, even the students in Tazewell, TN, receive the same education as students in Memphis or Nashville,” says England.

Balancing the various needs between Tennessee's rural and urban district is always a challenge for state lawmakers, but what more do they hear from these teachers during classroom visits?

“One thing I think is important to know is that high expectations matter,” says Hamilton County teacher Erin Glenn. The 8th grade social studies teacher has withstood the changes in student testing, teacher evaluation, and expectations mandated by the state in recent years.

“It may require a little more on our end, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the big picture reality, where students are able to apply the skills they have learned and apply those to college, the military, opportunities,” says Glenn.

They are just some of the voices being heard as lawmakers always aim to improve what goes on in classrooms.
