Two Indicted For Murder In Basketball Court Shooting Last Summer

(SHELBY COUNTY D.A. NEWS RELEASE) - June 28, 2017 – Two young men have been indicted on first-degree murder charges and multiple other felony counts for allegedly opening fire on a group of young people who were playing outdoor basketball last summer at the Raleigh Community Center, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Wednesday.

Lorenzo Jones, 18, and Deeddrick Walton, 20, are accused of killing 21-year-old Justin Davis in the incident that occurred around 9:15 p.m. on July 18, 2016, outside the community center at 3678 Powers Road by Harry C. Pierotti Park.

Jones and Walton also were indicted on one count of attempted first-degree murder, eight counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon while intentionally acting in concert with each other and one count of employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony.

Witnesses said a black Nissan Altima pulled up near the basketball court where a group of young people were playing. They said two men, identified as Jones and Walton, got out of the car, walked onto the court and began firing handguns.

As the people on the court fled the gunfire, Davis was struck in the abdomen. Several friends picked him up and flagged down a pickup truck which took him to Methodist Hospital North where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators recovered more than two dozen shell casings from the scene.

The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Michael McCusker, division leader of Criminal Court Division 10, and by Asst. Dist. Atty. Devon Lepeard.
