Two Men Convicted In Shooting Death Of Man During A Hold-Up

(SHELBY COUNTY D.A. NEWS RELEASE) - MEMPHIS – Two men were convicted Friday in connection with the shooting death of one man during a mid-day holdup two years ago outside an apartment near Lamar and Prescott, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

A Criminal Court jury convicted 19-year-old Jamaal Austin of first-degree murder for the death of Hilvar Lopez, 25, while codefendant Dalvin Smith, 22, was convicted of reckless homicide.

The defendants will be sentenced later by Judge W. Mark Ward.

Witnesses said Austin was the one who shot the victim in the head during a robbery of Lopez and his cousin on Aug. 16, 2015, outside an apartment in the 1700 block of Morlye St.

Austin also was convicted of especially aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and employing a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony.

Smith also was convicted of facilitation to commit aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and employing a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony.

 

The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Attys. Greg Gilbert and Jose Leon.
