Two Plead Guilty To Murder Of Man And His Mother In Nutbush In 2015

(SHELBY COUNTY D.A. NEWS RELEASE) - Two men have pled guilty to murder charges in connection with the shootings deaths of a 29-year-old man and his mother in their Nutbush-area home two years ago, Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich said Thursday.

Derrick Smith, 30, pled guilty to two counts of facilitation to commit first-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years, while codefendant Robert Beman, 18, earlier pled guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years with no parole. They were sentenced by Criminal Court Judge Bobby Carter.

Victims Ronnie Winborn and his mother, Laura Winborn, 59, died of multiple gunshot wounds on Aug. 21, 2015, in their home in the 3600 block of Vivia Ave.

The shootings occurred when the two defendants went to the house to look at some guns Ronnie Winborn had.

Police were called to the residence late that evening by a neighbor who said Ronnie Winborn’s children, ages 3 and 5, knocked on his door and told him their “nana” (grandmother) and “daddy” were both dead.

The neighbor found Laura Winborn’s body in the kitchen and Ronnie Winborn’s in his bedroom. Laura Winborn had been shot eight times. Her son had been shot five times.

The case was handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Kirby May.
