Violent Weekend Leaves 3 Dead

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - A string of violence across of Memphis this weekend left three people dead and three others injured.

"I'm going to remember him as a wonderful, good, caring, loving brother that loves his family," said Gail Mitchell about her brother, 62-year-old Artis Mitchell.

"He gonna make you smile…that's my thing..say he'll make you smile, good...good...good-hearted," said Devin Sumlin about his father, 52-year-old James Sumlin.

Mitchell and Sumlin's families must plan funerals after their lives ended suddenly Saturday.

According to Memphis Police, around 8:20 p.m. Saturday the two fathers got into a disagreement in the 500 block of West Peebles Road in South Memphis before shooting at each other.

"Nobody knows what they was really into it about, but I do feel like it's a bad situation," said Mitchell.

Around midnight Saturday, an 18-year-old woman was seriously hurt after she was shot in the leg while at a party near Kearney Avenue and Echles Street University of Memphis area.

Around 2:00 a.m. Sunday, a shooting broke out between two groups of people in the parking lot at 400 E.H. Crump. Investigators said one person hit by gunfire died, another person was injured.

Then at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, a man was shot while walking into a North Memphis grocery store on Eldridge Avenue. The suspected shooter told officers he fired his gun in self-defense because the man tried to rob him. Police said the details of what exactly occurred are still developing. No charges were filed.

Family members hurting from some of the violence called for an end.

"I just pray that people just stop the violence here in the city because you know it just has gotten ridiculous," said Mitchell.

According to Memphis Police, there have been 40 criminal homicides so far in 2017. In the same time period of 2016, the city's deadliest year, there were 52 criminal homicides.
