Wednesday March In Memphis Protesting Immigration Ban To Proceed As Planned

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Hundreds plan to take to the streets of downtown Memphis Wednesday in opposition to the executive order by President Donald Trump tied to immigration and refugee travel to the U.S. A permit was originally denied by the city of Memphis, but Tuesday afternoon, that changed, and the march is being allowed to continue.

This comes after President Trump signed a temporary travel ban to the U.S. from seven Muslim majority nations, and an indefinite travel ban for all Syrian refugees.

“As the news came in, we came up with the decision of "this had to be done,” says organizer Dr. Jose Davila. "These blanket prohibitions on immigrants and refugees, that's what we are completely opposed against."

Memphis' activists, and members of the Mid-South’s Muslim and Hispanic immigrant communities, are all expected to take part. “Even though they are not the affected groups, they will still show up to demonstrate that this is not the Memphis they know,” says Davila.

City leaders initially denied a permit because it was requested less than 14 days before the event. Tuesday afternoon, the city released a statement allowing the march to proceed legally:

"We received written notice this afternoon from organizers of a planned march for Wednesday that they claim the exception to the city ordinance governing permit requirements. The city has determined that this event meets the exception for spontaneous events, therefore it is lawful."

The march will begin at 5:00 p.m. and go from the Clayborn Temple to the National Civil Rights Museum.

"They do not have to do very much,” says Davila. “This is not a major demonstration where they have to shut down downtown and all of that. We are going across a few streets that's about it."

A Memphis Police spokesperson said the department welcomes the first amendment expression of demonstrators, but said officers will not tolerate any unlawful destruction or disruption to businesses during the event.
