What You Need To Know About Signing Up For The Affordable Care Act

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Enrollment for the Affordable Care Act began Wednesday. But signing to is much different this time.

There are fewer days, and fewer locations in the Mid-South to get help signing up. Plus, you could be paying a lot more for insurance.

After several federal cuts by the Trump administration to what's become known as Obamacare, you'll only have 45 days to enroll in the healthcare marketplace instead of three months, as in years past. You can also expect, rates to rise.

“If you don't have health insurance, you can't afford health insurance,” says Memphian Manuel Brandon.

“It’s like a catch 22 because we do need medical insurance,” says Crystal Burnett or Marion, Arkansas.

If you don't have insurance coverage through your employer, you're required by law to have it. The enrollment period for the federal healthcare marketplace has been cut in half. You have 45 days to sign up.

“People aren't aware of what the changes are. People who have been under the Affordable Care Act are not sure if they need to re-enroll. Are not sure if they're still eligible for the same plan because plans change,” says Lydia Crivens with Christ Community Health Services. “It's really unfair the length of time that's been given, the lack of advertisement and marketing toward it."

The Trump administration cut federal grants and advertising. Insurance companies are also leaving the marketplace, which means rates are expected to rise significantly. But you still have to have coverage. And you must re-enroll, even if you currently have coverage.

“Most people are gonna miss out and they're not gonna have coverage,” says Burnett.

“I love Obama but Obamacare sucks!" says Brandon.

There are only a few places in the Mid-South where you can get help with enrollment. In years past, there have been more than 70 different locations.

If you're confused about coverage or need help with enrollment, you can make an appointment with Christ Community Health Services at 901-260-8500.

The deadline to sign up is December 15th. CLICK HERE for more information.
