Will Gov. Bill Haslam Run For Bob Corker's Senate Seat?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam left plenty of questions Thursday about whether or not he will pursue a U.S. Senate bid. In making his first public comments since Senator Bob Corker's retirement announcement, the Governor said he is thinking and praying about making a run.

How long before a decision is made and whether he might actually do it remain questions for a lot of potential candidates.

“I think it merits some time thinking about it and praying about it, which I will do over the next several days,” says Gov. Haslam.

While laying out how he will make a decision about running for the soon-to-be vacant seat of Senator Corker, the Tennessee minority House Democrats tossed Governor Haslam a curve, urging him to call a special session for hundreds of thousands of low-income Tennesseans getting healthcare now that Washington has failed for now.

“This is a great opportunity for Governor Haslam to show leadership,” says Rep. Mike Stewart.

“I don't know that a special session would get any different result than the last time we had a special session,” says Gov. Haslam.

While the Governor seemed pretty clear any Medicaid expansion would fail again, there's no such clarity on the way he leans on a Senate run, which is what potential Republican candidates like Marsha Blackburn or Stephen Fincher want to know quickly. If the governor runs, they might not, but when is the decision?

“I don't have an answer at this point, but it won't be, in fairness to others involved, I won't stretch it out forever, but I don't have a set time frame,” says Haslam. “It’s a personal decision about what you want to do with your life and can I be helpful in this role?”

Clearly, the aftershocks of reaction to Senator Corker's retirement announcement are being felt in every corner of Tennessee.

With a lot of attention focused on the Republican side, several more Democrats have expressed interest in running for the open Senate seat. They include two Nashvillians; State Senator Jeff Yarbro and businessman Bill Freeman.
