37th Central Gardens Home and Garden Tour

37th Central Gardens Home and Garden Tour

Seven houses, one mile, years of history and countless culture.

MEMPHIS – (localmemphis.com) Houses on Central Avenue will be showcased this weekend as part of the Central Gardens Home and Garden Tour.

Some of them so big they had to name the rooms.

“We’re in the theater of the home, which was originally the attic.” says Stephany Goodnight, chair of the Central Gardens Home and Garden Tour.

The theater is where we started the tour of the four bedroom, six and a half bathroom home owned by Michael Lauderdale and Danny Washburn.

At the bottom of the stairs we found the four rooms. Stephany was quick to point out the special and unique features.

“The house originally had horses; it was a very large property. There were horses out back and the homeowners would come in to sit in this tub and soak their feet,” Goodnight said.

The house turns 100 this year, and it has only had three owners. Stephany said that is rare. With that in mind, renovations have been done including in the kitchen.

“They did keep one original interesting feature which was the original shower itself,” Stephany said.

Shower heads like the one it had in the master bathroom would have been owned by wealthy people in the 1920s.

“The kitchen is in its third home. The cabinets and everything you see here were originally in the Belz’s home on Bel Air” Stephany said as she pointed out the modern yet old feel to the appliances and countertops.

Everything in the house as a story. Even the pool deck. Unfortunately Danny and Michael were a little camera shy, they did not want to share but I will tell you that the pool deck was modeled after a picture that the couple took in Bath, England.

Picture a square pool surrounded by columns with a concrete runner around the edge.

The concrete runner along the top was actually molded and poured; they were not modular pieces that were installed.

The home and garden tour is Sunday between 1pm and 6pm. Tickets are still available; for more information go to www.centralgardens.org.
