MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Immanuel Lutheran is a relatively small school with only 250 students, but it's making a major impact here in the Mid-South. It's not all about academics and athletics; its students there are taught the importance of giving back to the community as well.

Who ever thought learning measurements could be so fun? 2nd graders at Immanuel Lutheran are smart, engaged, and pretty impressive.

"This is a very bright class, they’re a very energetic class and they love to learn," said teacher Stephanie Glanzer.

Youngsters in this class are the norm. Students at Immanel Lutheran consistently rank highly in state testing.

"Our grading scale is pretty tough here," said teacher Renee Scott. "I mean we have a higher scale, so they are smart and very into what they’re doing."

The school serves students in Pre-K through the 8th grade. With only 250 students it's small in numbers, but large in its spirit of giving.

Prinipal Scott Browing points to the school's faith-based mission. "As we look at how to live out our Christian faith, serving the community is part of that so we want our kids not just to know academics, but know how to be a leader and serve those around them."

This year each class has adopted a local charity to help through donations and volunteering. Students also donate money each week to be given to kids in impoverished countries. Students like the family atmosphere.

Student Ashton Tennyson said, "The teachers are amazing and they’re basically like family because there is one class per grade and they’re all like my brothers and sisters and the teachers are so helpful - all you have to do is ask them anything and they’ll help you."

8th grader Jabaar Humphreys says it's the schools drama program that he loves. "You do musicals here, and I’m in some of them and I get to like sing and act and do stuff with my friends."

During our visit it was Spirit Week. Kids were given an opportunity to celebrate the rich history of the school, which was founded in 1947, and to also have a bit of fun. In fact, the kids were all dressed to the nines for picture day.

From excellence in academics to its commitment to the community, Immanuel Lutheran shows every day why it's a cool school.
