All Six Suburbs Pass Municipal Schools Referendums

The people have spoken, and they want their own school districts.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The Second time around was another grand slam for the suburbs. After a judge ruled it unconstitutional to have their own school districts, lawmakers passed a new law. It allowed suburbs to create their own school districts. Tuesday the people have spoken, and they want their own school districts.

All of this comes as the unified school district is set to open its doors for the first time August 5th.

The numbers say it all. Not as many people came out to vote as they would during a regular election, but more came out than they would for a special election. Roughly 20-percent of registered voters came out to the polls.

Some of the precincts were combined to save resources. There are a total of 44 precincts reporting. The entire election cost taxpayers more than $200,000.

Despite all the rallies to get people excited about voting, there were a lot of people who didn’t care anymore, or figured the referendum would pass with flying colors like it did last year.

The election commission made sure things ran as smoothly as possible this time around.

“we’ve increased the technical support a great deal to make sure we don’t have any problems,” said Rich Holden, Shelby County Election Commission Administrator. “there are not a lot of questions, it’s just a yes or no vote for each voter.”

The next step for the suburbs is to vote for the school board and start planning for the 2014-2015 school year at their very own school district.
