MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The 12-year-old Arkansas girl battling a rare brain eating parasite is awake and improving.

Kali Harding was sickened by the parasite after swimming at an Arkansas water park.

The parasite is found in warm water and causes a fatal form of meningitis.

Only two people are known to have survived.

When kali arrived at Arkansas Children's Hospital 19 days ago, doctors said she might not make it a week.

They placed her in a coma and gave her an experimental drug.

Now she is able to squeeze hands and wiggle toes.

She even gave her mom a thumbs up.

“You would have thought she'd gotten out of bed and ran as excited as we were,” mom Traci Harding said.

Doctors caution that Kali is not in the clear yet.

The community is raising money to help pay for the expensive medical bills.
