MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - A new high-tech gadget has become an important tool for doctors at Baptist Hospital in east Memphis. It allows patients who've potentially had a life threatening stroke to be evaluated by experts across the country, and all within minutes.

Doctors say the time saved can be key to saving a life. When it comes to treating a stroke patient, every second counts.

Julie Horn, an administrator at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, gave us a first hand look at new technology called a teleneurology machine. Think of it like Skype, but with a medical twist.

The equipment allows neurologists from around the country to call into Baptist when they have an emergency situation that needs an expert eye immediately.

"They call and respond to us within usually 10 minutes - sometimes a lot faster - within being notified," Horn said.

One of those doctors is Suman Kalanitha. We spoke with him via tele-medicine from his office in San Francisco. From all the way across the country he's able to control the camera on the machine and evaluate patients, giving him a bit of insight into their medical issues.

"One of the great things is that we're able to get there really, really fast because we don't need to drive in; we don't need to leave patients and get stuck on a highway or anything like that," said Dr. Kalanitha.

He also said most patients and families he's worked with don't seem to mind the distance. They're just relieved to have that needed medical advice on hand within minutes.

He joked, "Yes, yes, I'm a doctor, but I also play one on TV. That's what I tell people."

All jokes aside, doctors at Baptist say this equipment has become an essential tool in patient care.
