Bass Pro: No Sign on Pyramid Superstore will Face Mud Island

The new Bass Pro Superstore will be a good neighbor to downtown residents. Executives with Bass Pro Shops say there will be no north-facing sign mounted to the Pyramid.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The new Bass Pro Superstore will be a good neighbor to downtown residents. Executives with Bass Pro Shops say there will be no north-facing sign mounted to the Pyramid.

Mud Island residents have had the joy of looking at one of the biggest vacant buildings in Memphis for years. Work is now underway to make it one of the biggest Bass Pro Superstores in existence.

A business has the right to advertise, and a right to put up signs. But residents of Mud Island had complained that a big Bass Pro sign would be intrusive to their quality of life.

Tom Kroll has lived on Mud Island for years. He knows they have to let folks know that Bass Pro is in the Pyramid.

"We knew when Bass Pro moved in that they were going to have to have some signage. We just hoped it would be something that would not be garish and look good. I hope they'll do that."

His hopes will be answered.

Memphis City Councilman Lee Harris is a Mud Island resident. He heard the concerns, contacted Bass Pro officials in Springfield, Missouri, and he got an answer.

"I heard a few days ago that Bass Pro was going to accommodate those folks on Mud Island, and they're not going to put up a sign on the north side of that building," Harris said.

Bass Pro officials continue to work on a plan for building signs. The size was a major concern, but since hearing objections, they've gone back to work.

According to Paul Morris with the Downtown Memphis Commission, "They haven't come back with their modified proposal. I'm confident they've listened very carefully and analyzed all the issues. They'll come back with something, something that's good for both sides."

The Downtown Memphis Commission will hold a hearing at the company's convenience to hear plans and make a final decision.
