MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - With delay after delay, Beale Street Landing has carried a huge price tag for taxpayers. Investors for the restaurant, including the head of the Memphis tourism industry, just pulled out. Despite that, they say they still believe in the project.

Kevin Kane is not only President of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, he's also part of the group that was developing a restaurant at the Landing and abruptly pulled out.

"It's ready to go, all you need now is if they want to choose another restaurant operator, they may or may not. They're ready to go, all they have to do is decorate the place and it's ready for business," Kane says. "Things happen; there was never any contract signed, they were still in negotiations, there was some difference in opinions on directions and what people wanted to see. I think both parties agreed to respect each others opinion."

Currently the space is being used for special events through private bookings, which Kane says was part of the problem.

"We pulled out for a lot of reasons. Number 1, the catering demands, we got a lot of wedding requests - there were some things that weren't a good fit for us. It was a mutual decision. There's no animosity, there's no hard feelings."

He wouldn't expand beyond that. Meanwhile, riverfront development continues to search for a new restaurant to fill the multi-million dollar space.

Kane says, "This is going to be a great amenity for the city, it's going to be fabulous, we promote it now, we will continue to promote it, with or without a restaurant, that is irrelevant."

He says Beale Street Landing should be fully operational after Memphis in May.
