Blogger: More than 1,000 Shelby Co. Ballots Wrong

There is another Shelby County election controversy, and this one might have you checking and double checking your ballot.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - There is another Shelby County election controversy, and this one might have you checking and double checking your ballot.

Steve Ross, a candidate for Shelby County Commission, says more than a thousand voters were given the wrong ballots.

"These people who have already voted, the 1,019 I have identified have voted in races where they were not able to select their own representative," said Ross.

Ross says he traced the errors back to the voting database, which was updated this year because of redistricting. Ross says if the database is wrong, voters end up getting the wrong ballot.

He says if it isn't fixed, the problem will continue.

"Every day the errors aren't corrected in the voter file, there are more opportunities," said Ross.

Ross says it appears the errors are for State Senate, State House, and U.S. House races.

"We have had a series of issues," admitted Robert Meyers, chairman of the Shelby County Election Commission. "We learned about Mr. Ross's claims, took them very seriously."

Meyers says the election commission is investigating Ross's allegations, but it could be a few days before any potential problems are identified.

"If he is right we want to mitigate whatever damage that has been done," said Meyers. "And if he is not right we want to explain why not."

In the meantime, Meyers said voters should make sure they have the right ballot.
