MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com)-- "You're hired!" The Shelby County School System has a new superintendent, and it's a familiar face, with a nice compensation package to go with it.
On Tuesday night, the Board unanimously voted on a contract for Dorsey Hopson. The board had previously voted to name Hopson its superintendent. Prior to the vote, Hopson had been serving as interim superintendent.
Hopson's contract is for three years, and will pay him $269,000 the first year. According to the board, Hopson's predecessor, Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash was paid $284,700 in the last year of his deal.
Hopson will oversee around 50 more schools and tens of thousands of more students in the unified district.
"I think a hometown discount was in order," Hopson said.
"I think at the end of the day we don't want to get bogged down in money, this is about so much more." he added. "We are just looking at moving the district forward."
Hopson's contract also spells out a number of other perks, including a school-district funded car.
