Boyfriend Charged in Fatal Accidental Shooting

Memphis police have charged the boyfriend of a woman who was found shot dead in a Hickory Hill apartment Sunday evening.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis police have charged the boyfriend of a woman who was found shot dead in a Hickory Hill apartment Sunday evening.

Officers were called to the 3900-block of Hickory Farms just after 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. When they arrived they found a 20-year-old female victim inside on the floor with a gunshot wound. The victim, Daejanara Brooks, was pronounced dead on the scene.

A witness identified Brooks' boyfriend, 21-year-old Nicholas McKinley, as the person responsible for the shooting. According to the affidavit, McKinley came to the MPD Homicide office and told investigators he accidentally shot Brooks while he was playing with a gun.

Nicholas McKinley was arrested and charged with Reckless Homicide. He was booked at the Shelby County Jail on a $15,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court April 10.
