MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A large pizza with a side of health care? Papa John’s CEO says "Obamacare" will raise his pizza prices. The pizza company is passing those health care costs on to you, the consumer. The CEO, John Schnatter, says Obamacare will result in an 11 to 14 cent price increase per pizza.

Several people told abc24.com if it's going to cost them 3 extra cents to order a pizza so a Papa John’s employee can have health insurance they're fine with that. Others told us it is bad business.

"It'll hurt their business. Every time you go up on prices, it's going to hurt your business but if that's an increase, cost of business, it has to be passed onto the consumer,” said Jurey Howard, who is against the new health care law.

"I think health care is more important and once people realize that health care is more important I don't think they'll have a problem with giving $1 or $2 for the employees,” said a Memphian who supports the law, Reagan Drake.

Companies with more than 50 employees have to provide affordable health insurance or pay a $2,000 fine for each uninsured employee. More than 16,000 people work at Papa John's restaurants worldwide.

"Even though they'll cry about the increased costs they'll find a way to make it work,” said University of Memphis Economist Professor Dr. John Gnuschke. “If they can shift the cost off to consumers, their customers, then in fact they're going to do that."

Dr. Gnuschke says people are already paying for the uninsured.

"If a Papa John’s employee gets sick now, who covers that? Well, the people with insurance cover that,” he told abc24.com. "Now we're asking them to pay for their own employees and that's only fair."

Whether more expensive pizza will hurt Papa John’s business, Gnuschke says that'll be up to the consumer.

"I think they wouldn't mind an extra charge on their pizza. I wouldn't anyway,” said Drake.

"I don’t agree with it. I think it's bad business,” said Howard.

Dunkin' Donuts, Quiznos, Subway, and Burger King are also against Obamacare.

President of North America for Burger King Worldwide sent ABC 24 News the following statement:

“The new federal health care law will have a major impact across the restaurant industry. While the final regulations have not been issued, Burger King Worldwide shares the concerns of its franchisees, many of whom are small business owners. When this law takes effect in 2014, many of our franchisees will struggle with how to reconcile the financial implications of these regulations and will likely take other measures to reduce costs. In addition to working closely with our franchise community and the industry to ensure that the concerns of small business owners are being considered, we continue to speak with members of Congress about adopting a profit-per-employee model.”

It won't just be PapaJohn's. For all you obamabots who can't seem to think on your own, or do any sort of real research, before posting. It is unreal, how you want to blame everyone from Bush to Reagan, for all the failures of this admins. that with all of the hopey, changey things you voted for didn't work out. Even obama has admitted that he has not done his job. He has taken more vacations than Bush and Clinton did in each of their 8 years. Explain THAT! hang in there, sunshine. maybe you'll get it before it's too late.

@ "ninty": First: did you mean to spell your screen name as "Ninty" (like "minty"?) NinetyMiles would be the correct spelling. Second; Their fat-a**es DO buy fast food with their EBT cards; not to mention things they are not supposed to: (http://watchdog.org/43198/ebt-fraud-and-abuse-looking-past-your-state/) OR (http://www.ehow.com/info_8617004_happens-food-stamp-fraud-tennessee.html) OR (http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/ebony-martin-maywood-fake-triplets-158515465.html) OR (http://wreg.com/2012/04/30/caught-on-camera-food-stamp-fraud/) & finally, but not lastly: (http://tennessee.watchdog.org/2012/07/30/taxpayers-fund-special-unusual-perks-for-memphis-welfare-recipients/)

Gasoline went up 30 cents a gallon because a refinery in California had a fire and we are not up in arms and accusing the Obama administration ? Why not....I would have thunk that the assorted maroons on here would cast the old government handouts line about welfare or some other assorted social policy under the bus. The corporations mention that they have failed to provide insurance to their employees and even though they have reaped huge profits and wealth for the owners, the owners did not care enough to take care of the employees, provide living wages, 401K's etc. The profit line at these companies is a long way from 14 cents, or do you think that the cost for the ingredients for a small pizza is anywhere near the % dollars they charge you. Costs are closer to one dollar and profits are closer to the remainder. Now some billionaires say that they can't afford to spare any of that HUGE profit and we are outraged at the idea that they are going to pass the charge onto you. Have you look at the enormous waistlines that result from devouring these food items. Methinks that the pizza and burger shop is doping your food and jerking your chain at the same time.

We already pay for the uninsured, whether its medicare or unpaid emergency room visits. So whats the reason prices have been going up every year for the last ten years. To blame Obama for rising prices is a ploy by the Replubican owners of this companies to get Romney in office, which has the same medical policy to be put in place with a different name. The USA's medical problem begins with insurance and pharmaceutical companies greed. If car insurance is mandatory so should heathcare. The debt this country is in didn't happen overnight. It was a domino effect created by the Bush Empire. You can only pick one domino up at a time. To you educated people, do you realize these people made millions off the housing crash, commision off military supplies, and billions off the oil contracts. Obama wasn't around when the prices of consumer goods started to rise in the mid 90's. This is all to say, stop putting faith in the MEDIA to tell you the whole truth and sway your votes. With the internet you can find out which way your elected officials vote. Are they really beneficial to you? Seek the truth. Replubicans and Democrats both make laws based upon the corporate good first, then the citizens. If it cost a few cent for this great country to be heathy, so be it, notice how these companies tell you they only care about profit and not their employees by passing on the buck to their faithful customers.

asa usual an idiotic statement from "tao". if you have ever spoken with anyone from lets just say London and were to ask them about their healthcare, they would tell you it sucks. why do people like you want this nation to be just like every other nation on this plant ? and one other thing if all of these countries insurance is so great.. why is it that when it really matters people all over the world come to this country for treatment ? " tao " it seems you have a deep hatred for the wealthy and republicans ( not that they are one in the same ) - who in the hell do you think makes it possible for people to have jobs..

Until this country goes one step farther and forces doctors to take all these fly by night insurance providers (and with the Socialist idiot in the White House it could happen,) they can refuse to take your insurance. Let me tell you something, right this very minute, people who use Tricare (military retirees, etc) or Medicare recipients have a tough time finding doctors who will take you because it is slow pay or because they have to agree to a much reduced charge. This is what is going to happen when everyone is forced to buy insurance. Doctors are going to refuse the xyz insurance companies customers, which means they will be no better off than they were before except they have money going to these insurance companies because the president you loved so much forced you to. On top of that, companies like the fast food industry who have lower profit potential have to find a way to recoup the insurance costs so you are going to pay more for your food so get used to it. One more thing to the Obama lover, yedc71, the idiot in the white house is forcing changes to Welfare to allow more lazy lowlifes not have to go out and look for a job and live off our tax dollars. This was in today's news. As for Obamacare, be prepared for longggggggg waits at the doctors, refusal of tests, etc. It is going to happen and I will love it when you can't get a mammogram, heart catherization or whatever because your insurer considers it unnessary and it is GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!!
