Memphis, TN -- A young Memphis mother has something we all carry everyday to thank for saving her life.

Lakeshia Hardrick and her grandfather were driving near the intersection of Boeingshire and East Shelby Drive on Tuesday evening when a shot rang out.

At the same time Hardrick was bending down to pick up her cell phone, a bullet whizzed by, smashing through the back of her grandfather's truck window, before coming to rest lodged in the door.

"I was sitting just like that, my phone was like right here, then when I leaned over, it passed that way," Hardrick said as she traced the path of the bullet.

"When I turned around, I saw the hole, the hole right here, I was like, someone just shot behind us. Then I saw that, and I was like oh my, I would have died," she said.

Memphis Police say it all started around 4:45 p.m. when an unknown suspect started shooting into a small Saturn sedan. Police say the driver of the sedan sped through the intersection and swerved into traffic where it got into an accident as it tried to escape the gunfire.

The two teens were taken to The Med for injuries from the crash; nobody was hit by the gunfire. A 17-year-old was transported in critical condition, an 18-year-old was taken in non-critical condition.

"If it would have hit me I would have been dead. People crazy in Memphis, rush hour traffic like that?" Hardrick said. "You never know when you might die."
