Check Engine Light Problem Up to City, State to Change

A check engine light means a failed auto inspection for Memphis drivers and it was the City of Memphis that agreed to that standard.

Would like to know the quality of our air each year for the past 10-20 years and if it has actually improved as a result of these inspections. According to another article on this website, Janet Hooks said she was told we had the "dirtiest" air. What exactly does that mean? Sounds to me like the emissions tests are NOT working. With Memphis being a main thoroughfare for travelers I'm not sure more stringent emissions control for ONLY Memphians is the answer. Its like a law that allows a lottery in a state, but doesn't allow its own citizens to buy tickets. Another way to look at it is... The citizens of Memphis are being blamed for something that we have no control over but yet we're penalized as if we're the cause of that problem. Doesn't sound right does it?

I have a Nissan Pathfinder and whenever the gas tank is not fully closed, the check Engine light comes on. All I do is turn it off and screw the lid of the gas tank a few times more and the light will go off. I had spent a lot of money on oxygen sensor and other jobs that never solved the problem on other Nissan and learned from that. The Nissan that I have now tells you so on the gas tank area. So, EVERBODY try that and see if it works for you.

This same station posted a story on 2/21 where Janet Hooks blamed the FEDERAL government for the problem. Now a senator tells us it's a state/local requirement. Why don't these "reporters" follow up and help us see who knows what they're talking about. My bet: Janet Hooks is full of it.

According to my mechanic, the check engine light costs a lot of money to diagnose and fix, and often comes back on even though there's no real problem. He also said that most of the time the computer shows it's the oxygen sensor and, when replaced, the light still stays on. Memphis needs to NOT look at the light since it can be too many things, including a malfunction of the light itself.

It's a money thing and will push the impoverished Memphians who can't afford the hundreds of dollars in diagnostics and repairs to do what? Stop driving? NOT. They will break an unjust law which will cost even more money in fines and court costs, which end up where? In the City Treasury! So in the end, it's all about making money. Protect the environment? Nope. Screw the poor, make life harder on the economically at risk? YES!

Wow, a liberal congressman saying something is a state issue. Shocking! We are in the end times.
