GERMANTOWN, TN (abc24.com) - It isn't smelly yet, but frustration is growing as a garbage strike affecting hundreds of thousands of residents in the Mid-South prepare for the second day of a trash strike.
"I don't know about you, my can is full, so I'm a little frustrated," said Mark Barford, a Germantown resident. "I'm not a real happy citizen right now."
The strike started when approximately 180 Republic Services Sanitation workers walked off the job, protesting unfair working conditions.
"The more hours we work the less money we get," one worker said early Monday morning.
The strike has forced cities across the Mid-South to scramble, with trash service delays in Fayette, Shelby, and DeSoto Counties.
"There is trash out there that didn't get collected today," said Patrick Lawton, City Administrator for the City of Germantown. "It behooves them to try and settle this dispute."
Republic Services says it hopes to restore service to its commercial clients on Tuesday and residential services on Wednesday. The company says it will work through the weekend to get all the trash picked up.
