MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com)--Green space versus car space. A proposed four lane highway is supposed to ease rush hour congestion on Walnut Grove Rd. and Farm Rd. Some are concerned that the roadway could shatter the peace of Shelby Farms.

"My feeling is that we need to research and document alternatives. I do not wish to be asked to vote on something or to speak to something without alternatives," said Maxine Strawder.

Citizens voiced their opinions on whether the city should add a new road to ease congestion on Walnut Grove Rd. and Farm Rd. The proposed four lane Shelby Farms Parkway would run through the western side of the park.

"I've lived here for 25 years and the traffic on Germantown Road has deteriorated the entire period. We need another north/south avenue through east Memphis. I use the park with my kids and my bikes and my dogs and I love it, but this can be done," said Tim Waters.

If given the green light, planners say Farm Road would no longer be open to traffic. It would only be for recreational use. Many citizens say they felt other alternatives should have been given rather than adding a new road. The Sierra Club is one of the nations oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization. They were originally for the new proposed Shelby Farms Parkwa,y but they have now changed their minds.

"One of the main reasons is we think that the new freeway change will take most of the traffic that now is trying to come through the farms, and if they build this, it will be unnecessary. Plus, it will draw traffic through the farm," said Steven Sondheim.
