MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - That light that brightens your street is going to cost you some money. The City of Memphis has transferred all street light maintenance to Memphis Light, Gas, and Water.

The trouble is, MLGW is going to charge you more money on your bill to pay for making sure those street lights work.

And that's got people angry.

Check out the back of your Memphis Light, Gas, and Water bill and see what you pay for.

Barbara Walls has seen it.

Get ready for one more.

The City of Memphis transferred street light maintenance to MLGW. It used to be paid for with tax money.

Now everybody who has an MLGW bill in Memphis will pay. $1.09 if you live in an apartment. More than four dollars if you live in a house.

“That's outrageous. What have we got to do with street lights? I'm having a hard enough time paying bills now. Four more dollars?! Four more dollars will mean ain't nobody gonna afford to have no lights on,” Wells said.

Living in the city isn't for the faint of heart, or empty of wallet.

“You know, you look at it this way. Ain't nothing free in life,” one resident said.

Nothing but the parking for those who are trying to pay their utility bills.

Street lights are critically important in a city like Memphis. Thugs love the dark. Make the street bright, and maybe the night becomes safe.

Which is why Barbara Walls isn't complaining about the plan.

Members of the city council will vote on this Tuesday.
