Memphis, TN (abc24.com)

Representatives from more than 30 Memphis-area charter schools gathered at the University of Memphis on Saturday, February 9th. The city-wide Charter School Fair was introduced in order to provide more information and assistance to parents, students, and families about the enrollment process.

This is the tenth year that Memphis-area communities have had the option of public charter schools available. Ten additional charter schools are expected to open before the end of the year.

Charter schools are public, tuition-free schools of choice. They receive autonomy from the public school system, but in exchange are held to higher accountability standards than traditional public schools. Many of these charters schools offer longer school days, personalized learning programs, and special curricula such as college prep and the arts.

Oscar Gillespie, a Soulsville Charter School parent, said about the schools: "I think it gives the kids a better opportunity for higher education... to be more prepared for higher education, and it gives them more opportunities."
