Cooper Young Hit & Run Suspect in Court for Child Abuse, DUI

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The woman charged with hitting two people in Cooper Young last year with her SUV faced a judge Monday.

Adrienne Spates was in court for charges of DUI and child abuse. She had been very publicized as the mother of conjoined twins separated by Memphis doctors.

When she was arrested the twins were taken to the hospital, where doctors said the children's colostomy bags hadn't been changed in hours.

Spates is the woman also charged with last year's much publicized hit and run in the Cooper Young neighborhood.

The accident left Shannon Parker and a friend seriously injured. Spates left the scene.

Monday, she had an opportunity to talk to the victims. She didn't.

She could have walked away from us and our questions at any time. She didn't.

Spates is known for flipping her middle finger at news photographers, for bending over on her front porch letting the world know how she felt about being charged in last year's hit and run.

Meanwhile, there was a court hearing where nothing happened.

Spates' attorney Mitch Wood stated, "They changed prosecutors between the last setting and this setting; the prosecutor on this case is no longer in this special court division so we did not get a whole lot done on the case today."

Adrienne Spates sat for almost five full minutes ignoring our questions, and then she left.

Justice moves like a car on square wheels and in this case there's no exception. She has been continued until August 15. No trial date has been set, but I'll be watching.
