MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The American Planning Association has named Cooper-Young in midtown Memphis as one of America's greatest neighborhoods.
The association singled out Cooper-Young for its historic architecture and vibrant business and entertainment district with about 200 shops.
Cooper-Young hosts one of the most popular festivals in Memphis, and to pull it off it takes dedicated residents and stakeholders like business owners and community leaders; Cooper Young has plenty.
Another reason Cooper-Young is one of the 10 greatest neighborhoods in America is because between 1991 and 2011 the Cooper-Young Development Corporation redeveloped 60 neighborhood properties. That attracted to new homeowners and a diverse crowd on nights and weekends.
Cooper-Young is not without its drama. There have been hit and runs, a rash of burglaries, and even shootings in the area. But people who live there urged Mayor A C Wharton and Memphis police to step up and do something about the crime and they got results. Police temporarily set up surveillance cameras and they also opened a substation.
