County Commision Votes Down Property Tax Increase

There are no new taxes for Shelby County, at least not yet. The Shelby County Commission voted down Mayor Mark Luttrell's property tax rate increase of 36 cents in its third and final reading Monday.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - There are no new taxes for Shelby County, at least not yet. The Shelby County Commission voted down Mayor Mark Luttrell's property tax rate increase of 36 cents in its third and final reading Monday.

6 cents of the proposed tax rate would have gone to the newly merged Memphis and Shelby County school system. With the failing of this plan, now the amount the schools will receive is in question.

Budget talks now go back to committee, meaning it will be at least four weeks until a final plan can be approved. The fiscal year started on July 1 and without an approved budget in place, the county government is operating on a provisional budget.
