I am native of Memphis who is currently studying Urban Planning in New York City. This gas tax gave me hope that I could find a meaningful transportation job back in my hometown, and I was seriously considering moving in two years if this ballot passed. A 1/2 cent of gas is a very small amount of money to pay for actual infrastructure improvements that will lead to very real, long-term economic benefits. Needless to say, I am very disappointed in how Memphis's citizens decided to handle a very important issue. This issue will only become more important as the century unfolds, and Memphis will be lagging behind everyone else.
