MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Based on the findings of a TBI investigation, the District Attorney's office announced Friday it will not prosecute a Memphis police officer who shot and killed a teenager while off duty.

The TBI was requested by Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich to investigate the shooting death of 15-year-old Justin Thompson. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Monday, September 24 near Wooddale Ave and Jenkins St in the Parkway Village area. Thompson was transported to The MED where he was pronounced dead. MPD Officer Terrance Shaw, who was off-duty at the time, said Thompson was trying to rob him when he shot the teen.

On February 1, Weirich stated she would not present the case to a grand jury. "There is insufficient evidence to create a reasonable chance for a conviction against Mr. Shaw, particularly when considered with the foreseeable defense that could be raised under the evidence," she stated.
