DeSoto County Seeks Public Input on Recreational Projects

DESOTO COUNTY, MS (localmemphis.com) - Do you have an idea for a recreational project in DeSoto County? Officials want to hear it.

From new walking trails and bike lanes to brand new playgrounds - if residents want any of those things, now's the time to speak up. The county is trying to figure out how to spend nearly $350,000 on recreational improvements.

Resident Eric Ashworth said, "If there was anything that I would like to see done, more stuff for the children. I'm a single parent raising two teenage boys, and it doesn't really seem like there's a lot stuff in the area for teenage kids."

"In the county I think you can improve clean up," said resident Paula Rise.

The Recreation District Commission was created last year. It's already added landscaping and park signs, as well as lighting. Residents we talked to are excited to be a part of the process, and they have plenty of ideas.

"The disc golf park in Southaven and Horn Lake is real nice, and they enjoy playing that. I'd like to see Hernando maybe incorporate something like to just, you know, give the kids something to do," said Ashworth.

For outsiders though, tourists just passing by, DeSoto County has already impressed. Tourist Doug Gesswein said, "It's a very friendly area."

Eligible projects include on-road and off-road trails.
