Did You Know? June 14th is Flag Day

Everyone knows the 4th of July is America's birthday, but not everyone knows June 14th belongs to our flag.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - It's the birthday of an American icon: our country's flag.

Did you know June 14th is Flag Day? How about what the day is all about?

Flag Day marks the day the United States officially adopted our nation's flag. It happened on June 14, 1777.

Everyone knows the 4th of July is America's birthday, but not everyone knows June 14th belongs to our flag.

"I didn't know it was Flag Day at all," says Mark Crabb.

"I did," says Cindy Toler. "I actually just told a person in the bank that. He didn't realize."

The Stars and Stripes first received its special day in 1916 after a proclamation from President Woodrow Wilson.

It wasn't until 1949 that Congress declared it a national holiday, putting it on the calendar.

"I know of Flag Day, but I do not know what it's about," says Charlie Burrell.

"My birthday is the 15th of June so I always remember," says Roger Cary. "I have a flag I hang off the front porch."

That's how the day is supposed to be celebrated. In fact, Americans are urged to put out their flags all week.

"That is awesome," Burrell says. "It shows our devotion to our country and our independence."

"It should remind people what our country stands for," Toler adds. "Just remember the flag isn't there for decoration. We fought for this and we give lives."

"We need to show our American spirit you," Crabb agrees. "Not just one day, the entire year."

If you're looking for another reason to celebrate our country, June 14th is also the birthday of the U.S. Army.
