MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Cordova girl out trick-or-treating was attacked by a dog on Monday, October 31, 2011, around 7:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Heather Leigh Lane.

Memphis police say the 9 year old was mauled by the vicious attack of a German Shepherd and suffered injuries to her right arm and leg. She was taken to the hospital by her parents.

A 34-year-old man told police that he shot the dog to make it stop attacking him, after he shouted at it to try to get it to stop attacking the girl. The dog then turned on the man and bit his leg, that's when the man shot the dog.

The dog was taken by animal control for observation. The girl will need plastic surgery to recover from her injuries.

wow....I'm wondering why they're not making a big deal out of this? They make it top news when it's a pit bull involved. This just goes to show you...it's the owner, not the dogs!

Sorry to hear that it happened, she looks like sweet girl that would not hurt a fly or antagonize a dog, but things happen and I glad that she will be alrigght. I hope her folks just go after damages not the world.

I am so glad this law abiding citizen had a gun. The police cannot do it all, maybe we need armed citizen patrols. I suppose some dog lover will complain but I would rather have one little human child safe than 1000 dogs. I hope the baby is okay.

Kudos to the 34 year old,.last night was the 1st time i went armed (I usually just carry a flashlight) while taking the kid trick or treating. Wishing all a speedy recovery(not the dog).
