MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The downtown Memphis trolley line is getting a makeover. MATA just received millions of dollars to spruce it up.

It will be spent improving the Main Street Mall. When the work is done it should look like a million bucks. Or I guess we should say $2 million.

More people are riding the trolley. Almost one and half million riders hopped on last year.

Mata just got $2.2 million from the federal Department of Transportation to make sure the Main Street line looks its best.

Work will be done over the next year. New lighting will be installed on the mall, drainage problems will be fixed, and landscaping will be added. Trolley track crossings will also be made handicap accessible.

MATA has had serious budget cuts recently. Trolleys and buses have had routes and hours scaled back. But under federal guidelines none of this money can be used for services, just improvements.
