East Memphis Son Charged with his Father's Murder

A son accused of killing his father is in jail.
MEMPHIS, TN— A son accused of killing his father is in jail. It happened Saturday afternoon in East Memphis off Kirby Avenue near Poplar Pike. Memphis Police say 24 year old Alexander Shelton attacked his father while he was watching television on the couch. His wife found her husband dead and her son gone. A neighbor told abc24 news the family had lots of problems with their three children involving drugs and now murder.

Neighbors say nothing really happens in their quiet cove. All you hear are birds chirping so when they heard police sirens, they knew something was terribly wrong.

Police arrived at a home in the 6700 block of Paper Birch Cove on Saturday around 3:45pm after a Mrs. Shelton found her husband dead. Her son, Alexander Shelton, is charged with his father’s murder.

According to police, his mother was running errands that day. When she came home she found her husband unconscious in the living room. Police say her 55 year old husband died from a severe head injury. Alexander was long gone and so was his car. A Tennessee state trooper pulled him over for a traffic violation in Jackson and reports Alexander told him, “I just killed my dad.”

Some neighbors are not surprised to hear the news. They did not want to be on camera but told abc24 news the Shelton’s were not typical neighbors. They say the family had trouble with their children and one of the 3 children living in the house overdosed on drugs a few years ago. Now the family has to deal with another death in the family on Father's Day.

Police are not releasing any motive for the killing. No bond has been set for Alexander Shelton. He's scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.
