East Memphis on Edge Looking for Suspects in Teen's Murder

Those who work in the Kirby Gates shopping center are on constant alert. Workers called police Wednesday night when they spotted a man who looked like a suspect.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - It's been an agonizing wait for family and friends of a murdered teen. A detective told Aaron Vasquez's family Wednesday night police were questioning a suspect, but there are still no arrests.

The teen was stabbed outside a Mexican restaurant off Kirby early last Saturday morning. Those who work in the shopping center are on constant alert.

Workers called police Wednesday night when they spotted a man who looked like the person in a surveillance photo.

A security guard saw the man and says he looked just like the man in the picture officers sent out. "I pulled the picture out," says Dorris Warren. "I said man, 'This ain't you? Tell me that's not you.'"

Warren works security for Kirby Gates shopping center. "Everybody has just been keeping their eyes open to see what's been going on," she tells abc24.com

It has been tense since 19-year-old Vasquez was murdered. "I work across the street and I've been kind of nervous about coming out and about over here," says Tandrea Stokes. She's not alone.

"In the back of my mind, I'm pretty much kind of watching out for where I'm at and what's going on around me," adds Bart Miller.

On Wednesday, Warren drove her normal patrol, but it wasn't a normal night. "It was kind of a wild night you know for me."

Around 9 o'clock she says the manager of Kroger called "and told me the guy was on the property, a suspect who looked like the picture."

Police released a picture of a man earlier this week wanted for questioning in Vasquez's stabbing.

"I pulled the picture out and I said 'Hey, is this you on this picture?' he said 'No, that's not me." I said, 'This is you!'" Warren alerted police, who took the man into custody.

"He was acting all agitated," she says. "He was ducking and dodging from me."

So far, officers have not confirmed any arrests.

Warren knew Vasquez. She hopes if the man she caught is the killer, he'll soon be charged.

"If that is the guy, I hope they get him and Vasquez's family gets justice. I was just doing my job. That's what security is supposed to do: observe and watch. That's what I was doing. I'm glad he's off the street if that's him."
