Elvis Week: Be A Hometown Tourist

Get ready to curl your lips and swivel your hips. Thousands of Elvis fans from around the world will soon make the pilgrimage to Graceland for Elvis Week.
Memphis, TN- Get ready to curl your lips and swivel your hips. Thousands of Elvis fans from around the world will soon make the pilgrimage to Graceland for Elvis Week. But many Memphians won’t.

Ask a typical Memphian whether they’ve ever been to Elvis week, they’ll tell you no. Many Memphians have never made a trip to Graceland. “It’s a classic example of not being a tourist in your own town. Most New Yorker’s have never been to the Statue of Liberty. Most Memphians have never been to Graceland,” said Kevin Kern, the Director of Public Relations at Elvis Presley Enterprises.

From August 10th through the 17th, you have the chance to be that hometown tourist. The Elvis Week schedule is jam packed! “One of our biggest events is the ‘Aloha From Hawaii Celebration.’ It’s the 40th anniversary of this monumental television event,” said Kern. Also on the agenda, a fan favorite, the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. Participants from around the world compete for cash, prizes and bragging rights.

The signature event is also the most moving, the annual candlelight vigil. “When we do that and you see those thousands of people with their candles lit, it’s truly and awe inspiring moment and you do get chill bumps,” said Kern.  Fans walk up the driveway into Meditation Gardens carrying a candle in quiet remembrance. The gates remain open until all who wish to participate in the procession have done so, which typically takes until the early morning hours of August 16th, the anniversary of Elvis’ death. “It’s hard to understand why Memphians don’t experience what people from around the world travel here to see,” said Kern.

Elise Wheeler is a rare breed, a Memphian who has been to Graceland and who has also experienced Elvis Week. She says it’s an event not to be missed. “They need to go. It will change your life.”
