MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Violent crime is back on the rise in Memphis after reports last year that the city was making progress. This year, the FBI ranks Memphis as the 5th most dangerous city in America.

The FBI just released numbers for 2012. Memphis' violent crimes went up, with more murders, assaults and rapes.

Being the fifth most violent city in America isn't a shock to Kevin Smith. "I thought we were number one," he said. "I'm from overseas so I've seen much more violence than what's going on here."

He says Memphis feels safe, but violent crimes like murders and aggravated assaults are on the rise. There were 117 murders in 2011; that number rose to 133 in 2012.

"It doesn't make me afraid," said Memphian Gwen Clemons. "It just makes me be more cautious about my surroundings and where I go. It's kind of like I wouldn't go to the gunfight, you know, some areas to avoid in this city. I think that's in all major cities."

Sabrina Miller just moved to town. She didn't get a warm welcome. Being the 5th most dangerous city rings true to her.

"Two weeks after I moved here my car got broken into, so that sounds about right."

There were also over 100 more aggravated assaults in 2012 than 2011.

Clemons says, "I think it's something the police director maybe wants to take a hard look at."

The city's police department is facing big cuts in this year's budget. Residents don't like hearing that.

"It would send the wrong message to the police department and the fire department," Clemons noted, "I think that's definitely the wrong thing to do and I would be upset as a taxpayer."

The rankings are for cities with more than 100,000 people. Memphis also ranked 10th as the most dangerous city for women due to the high number of rapes reported.
