COVINGTON, TN (abc24.com) - Citizens and law enforcement from around the Mid-South joined together Wednesday for the Tipton County peace officer's memorial service.

The service in Covington, Tennessee was held to honor local law enforcement officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Tipton County Sheriff Pancho Chumley stated, "120 officers on average or more each year lose their life in the line of duty, and the least we can do is keep their memory alive."

Jakendria Bernard added, "My mom used to be a police officer and I believe it's wonderful for people to put their life on the lines for us and for us to be safe in this community."

The memorial service was held in conjunction with National Police Week, which lasts until this Friday. Accordingly, by presidential order, American flags were to be flown at half staff.
