Family Discovers Body on Mississippi River

Investigators say a body found on the Mississippi River Saturday afternoon matches the description of a fisherman missing for a week.
Memphis, TN -- Investigators say a body found on the Mississippi River Saturday afternoon matches the description of a fisherman missing for a week.

A Collierville family found the body Saturday afternoon on a sand bar across from Mud Island.

"This is traumatizing, I can't even say the words," said Shane Burton.

Burton, his wife, his brother, and two young family members, just 13 and 15 years old, were on the boat. Burton said his brother originally thought it was a dead seal, but Burton said he knew it was a dead body.

"I am still in shock," Burton said.

As the Memphis Police Department's Harbor Unit worked in the water, people gathered on the banks of the Mississippi River enjoying Saturday's beautiful weather, while trying to come to grips with what they were watching.

Chip Washington, a spokesperson for the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said the body matched the description of Bone Leang, a 37-year-old man reported missing while he was fishing near Shelby Forrest last Sunday.

Washington said the Medical Examiner would have to make an official ruling on if the body was that of Leang.

Burton said he almost didn't see the body, but his boat broke down near a sand bar across from Mud Island, leading to the gruesome discovery.

"I just pray for the family and pray for the best," Tasha Texas said. "A beautiful day and to come out and find something so horrible."

"Memphis is too beautiful for us to be finding bodies," said Rhonda Warren. "It is too pretty out here for us to see something like this. It's a shame."

Washington said it could take a few weeks for the Medical Examiner's to determine the identity of the body.
